8th Century - Hops Change Everything!

February 9, 2026

One of the most decisive moments in the history of beer occurs during this period. Before this, beer was flavored with various herbs and mixtures, but the result was not always consistent—the taste varied, and the shelf life remained limited.

The addition of hops gave beer new life. It enriched the aroma, added a pleasant bitterness, and most importantly—significantly increased the preservation period of the beer. Hops naturally protected the beverage from spoiling, and beer became much more stable.

Diversity of Styles and Stability

The mass use of hops laid the foundation for the diversity of beer styles that we value so much in the craft world today. Monks and early entrepreneurs discovered that by adding hops in different quantities and at different stages of fermentation, it was possible to create entirely different aromatic profiles—ranging from delicate floral tones to sharp, resinous bitterness.

This change took brewing to a new level. It became possible to achieve a consistent taste, long-distance transportation, and the spread of the same style across different regions. Beer began its journey from a local drink to a broad cultural product.

This is why the use of hops is considered a turning point in the history of beer. It was a step from chaos toward order.
