1,800 BC - The Code of Hammurabi and Beer.

January 26, 2026

At this time, beer quality was already strictly controlled by law.

In ancient Babylon, beer was so important that its production was placed under state supervision. The Code of Hammurabi regulated not only trade and labor but also the quality of the beer itself.

Babylonian brewers had clear, non-negotiable rules. If beer was found to be diluted with water, or if its quality did not meet the established standards, the producer faced severe punishment. These laws protected the consumer while simultaneously elevating the status of beer within society.

Here, beer was no longer just a beverage or a craft. It became a regulated product whose quality was a matter of state interest. This signifies that beer was an integral part of the economy, social order, and the legal system.

When the quality of beer is written into the law, it confirms one thing: beer culture was so advanced that it required legal protection. It may seem incredible, but quality control existed as far back as 4,000 years ago!
